Our Story & Mission

From the Driver’s Seat

Serve the Block™ started in the front seat of a car. As rideshare drivers in Kansas City, Amanda Jahnke and Darryl Jackson saw the reality of our streets every single day. They witnessed things that simply couldn’t be ignored: children standing at bus stops in the summertime with no shoes and neighbors sleeping on the sidewalk in 100-degree heat because they had nowhere else to go.

They also heard the struggles directly from the people living them—from seniors with no way to get to a grocery store to a heartbreaking account of a man who froze to death during a winter storm, using only a newspaper as a blanket.

The help is out there, but it’s hard to find. Amanda and Darryl realized that the guesswork was a barrier—one that was keeping individuals and families struggling to put food on the table, seniors stretching their monthly Social Security checks, and neighbors sleeping on the streets from getting the care they needed. They knew that if they could bridge that gap, they could change lives. This mission is their way of doing what they can to help.

A New Concept in Giving

Serve the Block™ is a new concept in the nonprofit world. Instead of making people in crisis hunt for help through complicated systems, we are bringing the resources directly to them. We have built a centralized hub—a place where searchable resource map, government resources, and specialized student and family support live together.

While other directories exist, we prioritize actual human accessibility. By doing the deep research and verification ourselves, we take the overwhelming guesswork out of survival. We aren’t just a directory; we are a single digital bridge connecting a neighbor in need to the organization that can help them right now.

The Future of the Block

CURRENT PHASE

The Digital Bridge

We are currently maintaining Kansas City’s most accessible and user-friendly resource map. This live tool provides a direct connection to essential needs like food, clothing, emergency shelter, and senior services, with more verified resources being added on a consistent basis. We provide deep-dive guides for internet access and family stability so help is always just a click away without the frustration of dead links or outdated information.

COMING SOON

Mobile Outreach

As we secure funding, we are taking this mission from the screen to the street. Our goal is to launch mobile outreach units and host local block parties that bring hot meals, hygiene kits, and essential resources directly into neighborhoods. These events are designed for genuine community engagement—neighbors helping neighbors right on the block.

Our Mission

Serve the Block™ is a Kansas City–based grassroots movement and nonprofit organization dedicated to uplifting underserved neighborhoods and low-income families through community outreach and support. We meet people where they are, fostering unity, inclusion, and compassion. Through food assistance, neighborhood outreach, and volunteer engagement, we help restore dignity, build trust, and meet real needs with care.

Together, we serve one meal, one neighbor, one block at a time.
